UNDER A PALE MOON

---------------------------------------------

This story is set in a modern world, a world of shadows and of light, of dreams and reality. This story deals with some of the darker elements of the cosmos.

The Place

Whisper City

The Time

0:00 Hours

The Scene

The Moon hung heavy in the whispering sky of Whisper City, smoke clogged the air with it's oppressive smell. Pumped from tall towers that polluted the world with a stinking stench of Progress.

Below her sickly pale light thrived a place of darkness and decay. A far future of suffering and pain. But in all things stir a ray of hope and light, from the decaying corpse of this rotten hell-hole were coming the seeds of a change.

The beaten up old police cruiser rounded a corner, siren barely able to contain the noise within, creaking and groaning under the strain of the turn. It skidded to a halt in the alley with a crash of overturned trashcans and boxes.

A single figure slid out of the door and flicked on a light, panning it around the rubble and strewn chaos. The thin beam touched the body of an unknown male lying face down in the dirty water, obviously dead.

The slick pool of crimson which pooled around his head revealed the source of the person's death. A severe blow to the back of the head.

The cop signalled his buddy in the car to call "it" in.

"Cops," said Safiiri, a young girl who made her life living in this hellhole, leading a small band of children such as herself. Homeless, no blood family to speak of, they had made their own family, bonding together to survive. "Our sister is in there, we'll have to get her out before they find her," she said to no one inparticular as they watched the police talking on the radio.

Settle yourself and get comfortable, and I will grant you entrance into a new realm, a place of magic, of friendship, of adventure, and of love. Where dragons roam the world, and evil rears it's ugly head in defiance of truth and light, only to be beaten back down by the followers of good. Welcome into our world, feel free to settle, to take root, and to let yourself grow into whatever you wish to be...

Antagonists!

Against the dark of the night and the slick of the city a lone figure watched from the rooftop with a sneer and a sly smile. He spread his hand and put the cop in the centre of his imaginary gun sight.

"Bang" He whispered.

As the cop signaled for his buddy to make the call, the figure chuckled to himself.

"Can't ave anyone disturbin the party now can we?" He laughed.

Gathering the folds of his long black coat around him, he launched himself into the air and down, falling like a stone, his target was the roof of the cop car. He hit the roof like a freight train and slammed into the lights with a crash of glass and plastic.

With his tremendous speed and supernatural strength, born of darkness, the roof of the cop car caved in and the windows smashed outwards with an ear splitting crash.

Max had arrived.

The cop in the car was crushed in an instant, when the roof caved in, the slick blood pooled out of the side door as his buddy turned around to draw his gun.

Max rose from the top of the car and jumped onto the bonnet, metal crumpling where he trod.

"Pretty late for you copper boy innit?" He asked with a laugh and another sneer.

The cop fired four shots into Max, they passed into his coat and he snarled, bearing his teeth, sharp and pointed.

"I'd say too late for you." He lunged and slammed into the cop, pushing him against the wall and hammering the gun from the man's jerking hand. What happened next was too terrible to speak of.

Max fastned his jaws onto the cops throat and tore it out in one foul move, a fountain of crimson and gore. His laughter split the night like a thunderclap. When he turned to look around the alley.

His eyes were like red hot coals.

Elsewhere...

The interior of Red's Bar was, as always, dimly lit and full of the smell of smoke, stale beer and worse. It was the busy time of night, and the place was packed. Every chair and stool was filled, and there were several cases of sharing.

Kalinah halted in the open door of the bar to take in all this and more, dark green eyes noting the group of mercenaries in one corner and a game of 'Knifey-Knifey' taking place in another.

After a slight hesitation, she decided to hold her business long enough to join the game. A gambler at heart (as a thief, one almost had to be), she Kalinah was always ready to make some quick money.

Especially if she had an advantage.

It only took a minute for the match currently running to end. 'Knifey-Knifey' involved up to eight players. Eight knives - seven with retractable blades and one real - were piled in the middle of the table, and each person would take one and stab themselves in the chest.

Needless to say, stakes were high.

The winner of the last game (and seven previous) smirked up at Kalinah as she approached and pushed the corpse off the chair she wanted.

"Hello, pretty-face," he leered.

"Hello, handsome," she replied, somewhat distantly.

"Care for a match? Just you an' me."

For answer, Kalinah pulled some money from a hidden pocket in her nondescript clothes and slapped it on the table next to the knives. "Very well." She looked at him directly then, straight into blood-shot blue eyes and into his mind.

As she'd suspected, he'd known which knife was the real one all along. In his thoughts, she could see the real knife with its tiny scratch on the edge of the wooden handle.

Supressing a smile at the ease with which she'd been able to pick his mind telepathically, she picked up a false knife as he gestured for the game to begin.

When only two knives were left, one real, one not, the man looked very uncomfortable. Rules said the challenger picked their knife first.

"Moment of truth," Kalinah said softly, and picked up the false knife. She waited pointedly until the man took up the real one with a visibly shaking hand.

Rules also said that if you backed out before the game ended, the other players had the right to kill you themselves.

Together, they plunged the weapons towards their own chests.

Kalinah wasn't the one to drop dead.

Standing casually, she took the money on the table and left before another match started, her attention turning toward the mercs across the other side of the bar.

"Kalinah," one said, not bothering to stand. "Nice game there. One day your luck will run out, you realise."

"Put a sock in it, Draz," she retorted, and threw a bulging wallet at him. He caught it, still grinning. "There's the bounty for getting that detective off my back."

"Good. All right, we're square now." He tossed the wallet to the middle of the table, not bothering to count it. Kalinah wasn't the kind of person to hire someone then refuse correct payment. It was a good way to end up very dead. "Sure you didn't want to join up with us, girl? Your talents could be very useful to us."

She knew he meant her thievery skills and not her telepathic abilities. No one knew about the latter. If someone found out, she'd be on her way back to the genetic labs. Maybe even in pieces.

"I'll think about it," she promised, then left the bar.

Outside the bar in the grimy streets, it not only has begun to rain, but from the confines of a dark alley, the sound of scuffling and heavy boots can be heard.

A few harsh thumps and a sound of toppling trashcans

Kalinah spared a sigh for the sudden rainstorm that drenched her within a second of leaving the close confines of the bar and pulled a black wool cap down over her head.

As she took a few steps into the water-slicked street, she head a crashing noise from a nearby alley.

Pausing, she peered into the darkness. Someone was in there, she knew only that much.

Making sure her broad-bladed dagger was handy, she called out, "Hello?"

Elsewhere....Assault...Awakenings

Three figures could be seen in the Alley, two were greasy large men, one armed with a broken bottle the other with a baseball bat.

The bat fell with a crash onto the back of another figure, lying sprawled in the trash, the broken bottle bit deep into the side of this fallen man. Drawing a red stain across his ripped t-shirt.

Neither of the two assailants were aware of Kal, yet.....

So they continued there brutal assault.

Until she called out, "Hello?"

The man with the bat turned and made an obscene gesture.

"Get out of ere little girl, before we spanks ya!"

Alley

Kalinah's eyes narrowed at the tone and she took a few steps closer until the dim light revealed what was going on in the alley. Forcing her tone to more seductive levels, she said to the man with the bat: "I'm sure you can think of better ways to spend your time."

The man with the broken bottle laughed, but stopped hitting the third man long enough to get a look at her.

Kal smiled and came forward, hips swaying. When she stood between them, she looked them both in the eyes.

Neither suspected.

So she struck.

The broad knife flashed silver in the rain and sliced the cheekbone of the man with the bat, then slashed the bottle man's right wrist as she spun in a roundhouse. Both men howled in pain and stumbled away from her - the latter dropping his weapon.

"I suggest," she said quietly, "that you leave this man alone."

"You don't even know him!" the bat man shouted, his wary eyes rivetted on the knife.

"Get out of here before I call the cops." It was a bluff, but both of these men were up for petty crimes and she knew it. Her free hand pulled out a mobile phone suggestively.

They left.

"Cowards," she muttered, and sheathed her knife. With a short sigh, she regarded the prostrate form on the ground.

I wonder if he has a wallet...

Alley - Spare some Change?

Kal was wondering about this guy's wallet, perhaps thinking about checking to lift it, when something odd happened.

And I mean, really odd.

From the body of the man, who was lying prone came a startling feral growl, his hands shot forwards and he scrabbled at the floor, fingernails digging into the concrete.

Not nails, they were becoming claws.

His clothing began to rip and tear in places, through the blood and the torn skin began to peek black fur.

Wounds closing...

A long and bushy tail tore itself from the back end of his pants, his leg bones cracking as they shifted from two joints to digigrade, sharp back claws raked the trash.

Soon Kal was left with a twelve foot, large, angry looking, wolf headed creature, with dark eyes. Green, like brooding emeralds.

And rows and rows of sharp looking teeth.

It began to sniff and scent the air, smelling for something. And slowly.

It turned towards Kal, jaws half open....

Penny for your thoughts?

Kalinah's eyes widened and her throat closed in fear. Her legs were locked... she couldn't run.

The only thing she could do was look into the animal's eyes.

Animal?

Human?

As afraid as she had been a second ago, she was suddenly amazed beyond words.

What the hell are you?

A Penny Indeed

Through the dim haze of his rage, Christian recognised the smell of blood, it wasn't his blood, no, it was their blood and it clung to this shebeing like the smell of fear.

He leaned forwards and sniffed Kal from head to toe, large nose snuffling her hair, down to the sheathed knife.

A growl rumbled through the alley.

The wolf creatures head raised level with Kal's face and it drew back its dewlaps with a parody of a smile.

Well, a smile or it was going to eat her.

If she could sense danger, she wasn't in any.

But she was probably too scared to run by now.

The Werewolf regarded her once more, dark green eyes softened a little.

She wasn't the one who'd done this to him

Where was the one?

"Who are you?" A Gutteral Snarling voice came out from the throat of this being.

"Kalinah." The young woman drew in a slightly shaking breath. "I stopped two men who were bashing you... Christian, is it?"

Before he could answer, she plunged on with, "I didn't do anything to you, I promise. I just heard a noise and saw..." she trailed off and looked at the wolf-man again, completely unsure of what to do, though instinct fairly screamed at her to run and not look back.

Christian's nose wrinkled and he forced a nod from his Lupine head. Still watching this young shebeing.

"Kal-in-arr" He mimicked softly, his tongue rolling the words around in his jaws.

"Kriztiun?" Again the gutteral growl. He pointed to himself and shook his head.

"How do you, Kal-in-arr, know my name in human form?"

His look was a little disturbing to say the least, he could also smell her fear...

"Do not run, shebeing, I can smell you did not attack me, you have their blood on your weapon." Christian was forcing the animal down and trying to come to himself.

"You are brave to stop the deadmen from trying to kill me."

"Dead men?" Kal held herself from looking over her shoulder to the street behind her. She was not about to turn her back on the wolf... yet, anyway.

"I heard them say your name," she lied, hoping fervently that the two thugs had known it.

And what would happen if this thing found out she was a telepath? She knew what he was... sort of. That was security enough.

But looking into the dark green eyes, she got the impression that there was indeed nothing to fear from this wolf-man.

"What are you?" she whispered.

The Lupine head rolled this way and that, ears flicking and nose twitching.

"Kristiun...." Was the rumbling reply, "I am an Alphawolf, a Shapewalker." The grin returned to the muzzle.

Christian fought the beast in him down and this time he had won, the rage of his wolf form was supressed for the time being. He took a couple of steps towards Kal slowly and carefully, tail swishing in the pale light of the moon.

"I am in need of a place to hide, Kal-in-arr."

As he said this he began to shift back to his human guise, the hair receeding and the claws slipping away. His fangs retracted back into his mouth and his whole head formed back to the visage she'd seen of him in the Alley. His wounds and his bruising were gone.

Christian was tall and lithe, with sandy blonde hair and deep green eyes, his clothing was tattered in places where the force of the change had damaged it. He was decent enough to look at though.

Kalinah felt herself relax as the wolf-man melted into a more human shape.

"I have a... den," she said, faltering on the last word. She didn't want it to be taken the wrong way... "It's not that far. A few streets."

"Get down!"

A single shot rang out, like the reverberation of a bell

"Get to your den, I've got your, scent, I can track you there, I'll cover you."

It is said that to fight monsters you in turn yourself must be very careful to not become a monster......

In Chris' case this was especially true, the powers that be had gifted him with a terrible and beautiful gift. But with this gift came rage and at times this was more dangerous to his allies than his enemies.

He charged into the alley, dimly aware of the gunman aiming for another shot, he dived headlong forwards and as he did so, his form melted into a sleek black wolf, jaws wide and an angry growl roaring from its throat.

There were three assailants that Kal could see. Christian (Alphawolf...?) blurred into a wolf and launched himself at the first, fangs glistening white in the rain.

She reversed her dagger to balance it between thumb and forefinger, letting it fly as another man turned his back on her to aim a gun at the wolf. The keen blade found his neck and felled him instantly.

Dashing rain from her eyes, she dove for the discarded gun.

The wolf was dimly aware of the glittering steel of Kal's knife as it nailed one of the thugs who was drawing a bead on him.

His charge coincided with the gunshot from his own assailant, which was aimed at a man's head. Not a wolf.

This gave him the time he needed to sink his jaws into the gunmans neck and bite down hard, savaging the throat.

Blood rained into the alley as man and wolf toppled forwards.

Leaving only one assailant left. He was going for the gun too, but Kal already knew that.

Someones reality is defined as that which fits into their worldview of things, anything that falls outside of this blissful state is either ignored or, feared....

Chris watched the gun rise towards him and heard the growl grow at the back of the throat. He sniffed the air and snarled, traces of gunpowder and spent shell, no sniff of silver.

The growl became more fierce, challenging the man

He was unsure of what to do, he shot the dog, the woman would kill him, he shot the woman the dog would kill him.

Choices must be made, but would they be the right ones

He fired...

Guess not...

The shot was pure and true, cept it did nothing except burst like a cracker against the fur of the wolf, teeth red with his companions blood. This was the point where his reality bought two tickets to a bus out of there. He should have gone with it.

Another two shots..

"Die mother!" he screamed, "Why won't you DIE!!!!!!!"

Another...

Chris padded forwards and began to shift, growing taller, more nightmarish and beastial his paws became cruelly sharp and clawed hands. When the change was complete he stood as black as Kal remembered from the Alley.

He stood before the gunman who fired his last few shots into him. The Crinos Wolf snarled and brought both hands together on the gunman's head, it squashed like an overipe melon....

He watched the body slump to the ground.

Monsters we are, lest Monsters we become....

A fleeting glipse of a vampiric visage came to Kalinah's mind at the word 'nightcrawlers'.

What, has the world turned into a nightmare before I've turned around twice?

Her jaw clenched and she rubbed her hands together, using the rain to wash her hands clean. She gave the wolf a sidelong glance and decided she must only be unnerved by him when he was both man and animal. Werewolf?

Next I'll be seeing dragons and fairies...

Shielding her eyes from the rain, she took a right turn and headed for a block of cheap apartments. Talk could wait until they were both dry.

'The Den'

The walk to what Kalinah called her 'den' was not much more than ten minutes through a series of drab, winding streets and back alleys.

She and the wolf reached the sanctuary of a small block of grey-brick appartments just before the light rain became a downpour.

Once inside, the young thief led her canine companion to the third room, unlocked the door and let them both inside.

The den was a small room, strewn with all sorts of odds and ends. Clothing was heaped in an untidy pile beside the low mattress that served as a bed, and a small fridge hummed in a corner.

There was surprisingly little rubbish in the room, though. Kalinah didn't mind a den being 'cosy', but 'dirty' wasn't in her vocabulary.

Chris rolled his head to look at Kal, "You're in no danger from me, but I can't say who you might have attracted looking for someone with a unique gift, or a pretty face."

He trailed off.

Kalinah shrugged with deliberate indifference. "Thievery is a common enough talent. Why would anyone pick me out?" She found a towel and offered it to Chris. "A werewolf, hm? What did those 'dead-men' want with you? You're not an escapee from the genetics labs, are you?"

Explanations and Questions

Chris shuffled around a little on the floor and put his back to the wall, he drew his knees up and placed his hands around them, locking the fingers

"Genetics Labs?" He queried, "Nah, I'm home grown." A laugh tinged bitter with hidden pain escaped his lips at that.

"It's not your thief skills they want Kal, it's the other talents you possess, don't ask me how I know, or why I should care, but they're interested in you now. Dead men like special people."

Chris shuffled around some more

"You don't believe in Vampires do you?" He asked after a long pause.

Kal felt herself go cold at his casual statement of her 'other gifts'. Did the whole world suddenly know? First that detective (now deceased, according to the mercenaries she'd hired), and now this guy.

Hells, I should have run when he told me to and not looked back.

"Vampires," she said aloud, trying to appear undisturbed as she sat down on her low bed. "Before today, I had never seen one. You hear the stories of course, but... " she shrugged.

"I'm sorry," Kal replied, trying to sound sympathetic for his benefit. She wasn't heartless, but she'd never known her family. Or even if she had one.

She found a spare blanket and tossed it to Chris. "That's all I can really spare. I don't have house-guests all that often." She paused. "So why do they want you? For some reason, I get the feeling they don't want you dead."

And what would they want with me?

He caught the blanket, his stance relaxing as the noise he'd picked up on turned out to be nothing more than a cat outside the building.

"To tell you the truth, I don't know why they want me, could be something to do with my unique gift." He chuckled a little, "Or it could be that they see me as a threat, I don't freeze at their touch, my soul isn't caught."

He wrapped the blanket around himself, "If their servants touch you, they can cause you to freeze where you are, not moving, not thinking, nothing, just like a statue. Then usually their dark masters turn up and either use you as cattle or.."

Chris shuddered a little, half remembering something, and shook his head.

"They fear anyone who can see who they truly are, if the world found out about them, they'd be hunted in the streets."

"Then why doesn't someone tell everyone about them?" Kalinah asked, then shook her head and raised a hand. "Don't worry. Stupid question."

Then she smiled slightly. "I'd like to see them control my mind," she murmured to herself. "I haven't had a good challenge in a while."

She blinked then, abruptly remembering that she wasn't alone. "Ok. They're after you, and you think they're now after me. Since you know more about the situation thanI do, what do you propose we should do?"

The lycantherope looked at Kal again, he wasn't sure she should be involved, but the Nightcrawler's would know, they could see through the eyes of their demons.

"We should lie low and think how to keep ahead of Max and his goons." He stopped, "You want to know how powerful Max and his kind are?"

"I saw him drop ten stories or more onto the roof of a cop car, nearly buckling the whole thing in two, he took at least eight rounds from a police handgun. Without breaking a sweat...and then tore the cops' throat out with his teeth."

Another pause, "Trust me Kal, Nightcrawler's are bad news." He shook his head, "If those Dead Men hadn't of dropped me by suprise in the Alley, I'd have torn them apart like so much kindling.."

No matter how good she was at hiding her feelings from her face, when Kalinah 'saw' what Christian had seen regarding this Max character...

She swallowed, eyes widening. That vampire looked like Rambo on steroids.

Turning quickly to cover her reaction, she shut the drab curtains. "If you don't mind," she said in a voice she commanded not to shake, "I think I'm going to sleep on this."

Provided I can sleep, now... isn't it night when the monsters come out?

Chris took the blanket and set it around his shoulders looking at the window, he crossed slowly over to it and opened the curtains slightly peeking out.

The moon's pale light filtered through the cracks in the sky.

He supressed a shudder and a feeling which ran through his whole being.

Run free and wild, hunt them like they would hunt you

He shook his head, he might be a werewolf but he was no killer, he only killed when he had to. And tonight he had to for many reasons.

He turned to look at Kal, his eyes glittering in the moonlight and he smiled softly.

I'm not a killer, a wolf's job is a protector.

So you think?

Leave me alone....

Can't Chris, I'm your animal side...

Like looking into two minds... no wonder I have trouble probing him.

Kalinah had never thought she might need a protector. She'd been on her own and depended on herself for so long... so very long. She never thought she'd be happy to have someone else around.

If only she could be sure he could be counted on. Trusted.

If he's still here tomorrow...

Kal met Chris's eyes, made the effort to give him a small smile, then turned, lay on her bed and wrapped herself in the blankets.

Despite the worries the day and night had brought her, sleep wasn't long in coming.

Chris looked softly at her once more and then turned back to the window as she slept, his mind was in turmoil, his 'animal' side was trying to maintain dominance, but the man was stronger, partly helped by Kal's simply being there.

She looked so alone, and vulnerable, but he knew she was independant and willful, and that he also liked in her.

The night passed swiftly and without further incident, the morning was heralded by the sun glittering through the crack in the drapes, drawing a thin line across the floor. Chris was still there, attentive, on guard, it was as though he didn't need sleep, he'd gone into a small bathroom to shave a little and tidy himself up. But now he stood like a statue against the rising sun, outlined by the light.

Chris stretched and yawned a little, spreading his arms over his head, he cracked his fingers softly, cricking his neck, and the yawn transformed into a small howl, not enough to wake Kal from her slumbers.

He went around the room and made sure it was a little tidier, but didn't move anything that looked as though it should be there.

He found the kitchen and the fridge, there was some food within, so, he cooked it..Hoping Kal liked Sausage, he placed some on a plate between two slices of bread, set the whole thing on a tray and slid back into the other room.

He wafted the tray a little close to Kal to wake her from her sleep.

"And I guess you're not that bad. I can't remember the last time someone made me breakfast in bed." She smiled at him.

For a moment an almost flashback hit Chris to a time when he ran under the stars and howled with the pack

growing serious again he added. "Nightcrawlers toe to toe and heel to heel aren't as strong as me, but in groups and with their allies. They're a clever and dangerous foe. They possess powers of the mind and powers of blood."

You've heard that line before, Kal. And it still cracks me up every time.

Oh, shut up.

Outwardly, Kalinah just gave Chris a nod and a non-commital smile before grabbing some clean clothes and entering the bathroom. She shut the door behind her (there wasn't a lock - she'd used all those on the front door), turned on the taps to the shower, undressed and hopped in. Then there was no noise besides the falling of the steaming water.

His hearing was good, apart from the sound of Kal's movement in the shower, he caught the fick of the lock on her door. Two figures waited outside the room, and he heard their breath rasping.

Then the door caved in, two uniformed men burst through the opening with shouts of "Freeze!" guns trained on Chris, he eyed them both.

Whisper cities finest watched this guy carefully, he didn't look strong and they had their guns. But they didn't like this at all, "he" wasn't supposed to be here.

The circling one moved to the Bathroom door and heard the sound of the soap falling, he looked to Chris, "Just takin a shower on your own were you?"

Chris nodded, tensing slightly.

His partner covered Chris with the gun and shook his finger warningly, "No hero stuff handsome."

Chris bristled.

The first cop moved to the door and kicked it open, barging in, before he could really see what was happening, he was forceably dragged back out by the Lycantherope and roughly thrown across the room.

"Shit!" he shouted as he slammed into the far wall, "What's this guy on Steroids?"

His partner waved the gun again and Chris glared at him, "It;s time you should..." He stopped and suddenly caught the smell of the fetid air, narrowing his eyes, he growled, "Dead-men.."

Both cops stopped and looked at each other, then fired at the figure, shot after shot, hammered into Chris' body, tossing him around like a rag-doll.

He hit the deck pretty hard and lay motionless for a while.

Meanwhile in the darkest corners of his psyche a Alpha Wolf emerged, they'd tried to get at this woman, she wasn't /his/ woman, but she was female, and she was his charge

When her bathroom door abruptly smashed open, Kal reacted without thinking and grabbed the towel to cover herself before remembering the water was still running. Furious, she turned the taps off. She barely noticed that no one had entered the room before she heard a crash followed by several sharp gunshots.

Kalinah hurriedly threw on a t-shirt and loose pants over her wet skin and drew her dagger from the pile of clothes. She could now see what was going on in the other room, and felt panic begin to claw at her throat at the sight of Christian's bullet-riddled body.

But rather than a feeling of fear and the need for self-preservation - to get away, a sudden hatred set her mind on fire. The first person she'd dared to trust in so long had been shot after asking her to take him to a safe place.

Even though it was no fault of her own, she knew that trust in her had been betrayed.

But she wasn't going to let it end at that.

"Bastards!" she shouted, mindless anger controlling her for the first time in her life. Charging through the door, she ran straight for the nearest intruder and lunged with her dagger. It proved to be a mistake not to try and trace his thoughts, as she soon discovered.

He twisted aside, one hand whipping out to clap around her forearm. Kalinah's gasp wasn't caused by the man's twisting of her wrist, but of the sudden numbing pain that shocked through her arm from fingers to shoulder.

The Cop's eyes were like two small souless black-holes, he grinned a smile, like the rictus-smile of death himself.

His back was to Chris, who lay there, bleeding and twitching for a while.

Intense pain, flooded his mind, and inside his head, the Wolf looked back at him behind a mirror of reflections. He reached forwards a hand and smashed the silver surface

The second Cop went downstairs to a jet black limo and tapped on the window.

"We got the girl Mr Carlton."

"Good...." came the voice, "Bring her to me, and we'll see about getting out of this, harsh, bloody sun." Carlton's voice was english and sounded irritated.

The second Cop turned to face the door and headed back inside.

Meanwhile...

Chris opened his eyes, and they were full of rage, Kal was in danger, and so was he, he could take mortal gunshots in their stride, yeah they hurt like hell, but these goons were using standard issue guns and ammunition.

Fatal Mistake

He leapt to his feet and stood letting his head tilt back, he felt the change it washed over him like a waterfall, intoxicating in its power. And he....

Howled...

To the dead-men it must have sounded like the ringing of a death-knell, they knew that sound all too well, a hunting howl of a shifter.

The cop turned in time to see the shift, he might have been a Nightcrawler spawned servitor, but unlike them, he only had a few skills, and this was something he wasn't expecting.

This would give Kal a moment to collect her thoughts and launch an offensive.

Cracking and crunching bones, the movement of skin and fur, the blood chilling sight of a man, forced into the shape of something from the worst corners of the mind, the shift was painful but it was part of Luna's spell. And Chris wasn't going to deny it......not this time

The first dead-man stopped in terror as his sanity was ripped ansunder. His mind was not as strong as his friend.

The howl seemed to hit Kal like a bucket of cold water. Forcing aside the pain in her arm through sheer strength of will and years of training, she utilised a psychic power she'd learned during her imprisonment in the labs.

The cop shouted in sudden agony and let her go to clutch at his head with both hands.

Kalinah ignored her freedom, though, and grimly kept her thoughts on the man, eyes narrowed in hate. She felt like she could keep this up until the guy's head exploded like an over-ripe melon.

Hurt my friend, will you?

The cop dropped to his knees, but Kal was distracted by a noise at the door. Her psychic attack fell away and she took a few steps back, wondering how in all hells she'd take on more than one foe and get away with it.

She didn't notice that Chris was alive until she'd backed straight past him.

Hide away from the raging sun, hide your self from the fire above

Chris looked down to Kal with his eyes full of pain/rage and then snarled towards the doorway. The snarl forced the cop on the floor to cover his ears even more and roll into a tight ball. He stepped forwards, snarling straight between another flurry of gunshots.

They tore into his fur and his body, pockmarking red gashes. Kal could see the exit wounds appear and then moments later fold in on themselves.

He reached the second cop and brought his clawed hand down across the wrist, slashing great rents across the man's hand and arm, the gun flipped out of his hand and slid to Kal's feet.

Just as Chris was about to hammer this cop through the floor in a double handed strike.

Nightcrawler? He sniffed the man up and down and caught the tell-tale stench of one of the dead.

Backhanding him through the door, Chris turned around and looked to the window, stalked towards it, treading on the other cops leg as he did so.

He grabbed the catch and opened the thing as forcefully as he could, it hung raggedly on its hinges.

Out into the breeze he jumped clearing the frame and the ledge, tucked into a ball. Uncurling in mid-flight. Plummeting down towards the limo like a furry bullet from the 3rd Storey.

He hit the roof hard and buckled it onto Carlton and his driver, glass popped in the windows and the headlights gave way from the shockwave.

Chris didn't stop there, he dug both clawed hands into the top of the car and pierced the roof, pulling the lid back like you would a tin of sardines.

In the bright sunshine, the last thing that Carlton could see was his furry-nemesis staring down with anger filled eyes. Then sun bit into his world and turned his safe cold night to day. Sundering his flesh and popping his bone, in a dizzying display of pyrotechnics, that left nothing in the limo save for two piles of ash.

One Carlton's and one the driver.

Chris, Howled again......

Background Info...

Safiiri was different from most "gutter rats" in that she was what is called a Nightcrawler, a vampire. Born into Darkness at the age of 19 564 years previous by a tired Elder who sired her then took his own life, she had been left on her own. For years she scrounged to get by, learning about her new abilities as she went. On the occasions when she met others such as herself, she had been happy at first. Then she had learned of the inherent evil of so many of them. Repulsed, she had escaped to the New World, and come to this place, slowly building her own coven of vampires. Taking in young abandoned children whom she could sense kindness, loyalty, and the like in, she helped them survive, gradually showing them her true nature, and waiting until they were old enough before giving them the option of joining her as a Nightcrawler.

Safiiri, hated by many of her kind, has fought them since, when she could, aided by those she has Embraced...

Current Day

Safiiri was devastated. Her youngest childe was dead, killed a few nights ago by the demonspawn called Max. We could not take him then, we had not our numbers...and I would not risk more of my young children to such as he... She pondered the newest tale, that of a Lycanthrope and a mortal telepath who had seemingly joined forces, and were pursued by the evil ones. Mayhap this may be of use to us. If we join with them, perhaps we will be able to avenge our lost family.

Safiiri called forth some of her oldest children, and discussed her intentions of approaching the pair. "I know that they will not trust me because of what I am, but if an alliance can be made, then we must try. I shall go alone. Should I not return, do not avenge me against them. Andrea will take my place and continue our fight. I leave come nightfall."

OOC: Welcome back, Sapphire. And you're doing fine.

IC:

Kalinah's Appartment

The wolfman leaping through the window with the capable dead-man left Kal with only the cop she'd half brain-fried for company. Once she'd recovered from the shock of seeing Chris take a chestful of bullets and survive with everything working, she picked up the gun that had fallen to the floor and crossed to where the dead-man was twitching feebly on her apartment floor.

She'd never killed with her telepathic abilities.

Technically, this guy's already dead. MindBlade or bullet through the head, what's the difference?

She didn't know, but that didn't stop her from pulling the trigger of the gun.

The cop stopped moving.

Kalinah quickly put the gun down and put on some shoes. She could hear the howl of a wolf from outside and knew they would have to leave. They weren't safe here. Either of them. Grabbing a few possessions - wallet, her dagger's sheath and a hair tie - she ducked out the door and down the stairs, all the while hoping that Chris had enough self-control to get out of the sunlight before the whole street saw him.

Underground

Safiiri made her way through the sewers towards the last known location of the duo. As she drew nearer, she heard a dreadful howling, as well as a loud crash. The Lycanthrope she thought, and picked up her pace, rushing through the sewers. As she reached her destination, she drew the heavy glasses and hat down over her features and pulled the long trench coat tight around her to block the suns penetrating rays.

Lifting the manhole cover, she beheld the Lycanthrope howling on top of a car that held nothing but a large amount of ash. I guess that takes care of Carlton she thought as she saw the license plate. Good, we are finally rid of him

"Psssst!" she hissed at the Lycanthrope from the sewer hole. "This way! There are more of them on the way, you must take cover. Come with me," she said and beckoned him forward, retreating back into the sewer.

OOC: Welcome Sapph, and you're doing great

Chris' sharpened senses heard the hiss of the stranger's whisper, looking down at the destroyed car, he whipped his head around towards the door, concerned for Kal's safety, his pack mentality kicking in. When she appeared in the doorway, he returned his baefull glare onto the stranger, sniffing, he caught something, but couldn't focus on it for now.

He growled slightly and leapt down, buckling the back end of the car even more.

When he landed on the floor, the ground around him shook, he looked at the hole and shifted back into human form, quickly, uncaring as to who now could see.

Need to get the hell out of here

He looked to Kal, concentrating on her, and the image of the sewer, hoping Kal's mind-powers would read his sending.

He then knelt by the hole and looked at the stranger down in the sewer, "I don't know who you are, but later is time for questions." Again his head snapped back to Kal.

He would not go down, until she was well down the hole.

Never leave a packmate behind

Kal didn't stop to say anything. She didn't even pause when the image of the manhole came to her mind, deliberately projected by Chris. It was no time to wonder how he'd ever figured her powers out.

Without breaking stride, she jumped down the manhole to land in the slushy contents of Whisper City's sewers. It was only a second before she realised she wasn't alone down there.

A young woman wearing dark, concealing clothes and sunglasses, even down here. And the way she avoided the light filtering down from above...

Kal drew back quickly, mind preparing to strike. "You're one of them," she hissed.

Chris, didn't stop till he hit the slurry at the bottom, pulling the lid before his feet clanged on the ladder. He then saw Kal facing off with this woman and once again, thanks to the sewer's pungent aroma, he couldn't smell anything.

But she was clothed in black, and protected against the sun, a thought flicked into his mind.

One of them?

"Ok, you have thirty seconds before I tear you up like a rag doll, who the hell are you?"

"My name is Safiiri, and since you've obviously figured it out, I'll go ahead and say it. Yes, I'm a Nightcrawler. I can't change that, and at this point, I wouldn't if I could. I know that you fight Max, the bastard that killed my young childe a few nights ago. I have fought the other Nightcrawler's for 552 years. I have a coven, and I will take you there if you wish an alliance. If you do not, I know you will kill me. I have already told them not to seek vengeance if I do not return. What say you? Will you join with us?" said Safiiri in a bit of a rush, as she was very nervous.

I really hope I'm doing the right thing she thought. If I'm not, Andrea will know where to proceed. She has been prepared for it for 152 years.

And so she waited for a response...

Kal kept a wary eye on the (to all outward appearances) young girl. After what had just happened in her apartment, she wasn't feeling too tolerant of these Nightcrawler creatures.

Vampires. Was there such a thing as a good one?

All she could make of Safiri's thoughts was a detemination not to fail her coven...

Then she realised she'd basically walked straight from the shower and into a sewer. Swearing, frustrated and just plain not knowing what to do, she rounded on Chris.

"You decide. You know more about these... these things than I do."

He looked to Kal and fought back the sudden wave of anger from her, "We go with her, then perhaps we can lay low and find out what the hell's going on." he snapped.

Slowly moving towards the Nightcrawler he watched for her reaction.

"Thank you. You have nothing to fear from me, but I certainly don't expect you to believe that at this point given what you've just been through. My coven is about an hour from here, we'll go through the sewers, which I will admit are rank. I can provide both food, a bath, and answers when we get there, not necessarily in that order. Kalinah followed in a sullen silence, her face set into a frown.

Calm down, Kal...

She forced herself to take a deep breath of the fetid air then review what had just happened.

She'd lost control. Plain and simple. All the feelings that had taken over when she'd seen Chris on the floor of her apartment as if dead... the Nightcrawler grabbing her arm...

She rubbed it absently, for it still felt slightly numb and sore, and suddenly knew what was wrong with herself. She was afraid.

You've known fear before, idiot. Master it and get over it. Don't be a slave to your emotions... you're a seventh rank telepath for God's sake!

Walking with the vampire and werewolf, she tried... but couldn't. She wasn't strong enough. Her eyes blurred and she lowered her head, blinking the tears away quickly and angrily.

Afraid...

Get used to it, her mind advised dryly.

Chris had always been an empathic sort so when he felt the swell of emotions from Kal, he instinctively put his hand on her shoulder and said.

"I know what you're feeling...."

Perhaps her did, and perhaps he didn't in the end to him, it only mattered that his friend/packmate was in pain. And that's what made him sad.

In his mind he howled to the pale sister moon to blink back his own tears

Being a vampire gave one the advantage of mental powers. Safiiri could sense a series of emotions from Kalinah, though she didn't go any deeper than surface emotions out of politeness, and a desire not to tick her hopefully soon-to-be ally off.

Safiiri led them through a series of winding tunnels, until they finally arrived at a seeming dead end. Before either of her guests could comment, Safiiri walked up to the wall, and lightly pushed on a series of stones, revealing a hidden door in the wall.

"I'm back," announced Safiiri as coven members ran up to see that she was in one piece. "I have brought those we heard of with me. As you can smell, we are all in need of a hot shower. Andrea," she said, and a small-boned seemingly young woman walked forward, with short blond hair and light brown eyes. "Show them to the bathing section, I retire to my quarters to freshen up as well." So saying, she turned to Christian and Kalinah. "I will meet back with you as soon as we don't stink of the sewers. Shouldn't take more than half an hour."

Turning, she went down one hall as Andrea indicated to the pair to follow her...

Back a bit..

"I know what you're feeling...."

Kal kept walking in silence. She couldn't stifle her feelings, but she knew how to hide them. Drawing a mental shroud around herself, she screened every emotion from anyone who had the power to 'listen in'. She wasn't exactly turning into a recluse, but she just felt like being alone with her thoughts for a while...

Safiiri led them through a series of winding tunnels, until they finally arrived at a seeming dead end. Before either of her guests could comment, she walked up to the wall, and lightly pushed on a series of stones, revealing a hidden door in the wall.

Kalinah didn't bother trying to memorise the pattern.

The Vampire girl called to another one, Andrea, then left down one hall as Andrea indicated to Chris and Kal to follow her.

Chris glanced at Kal, who didn't return the look and just decided to follow the guide. She was almost beyond caring at this point... things couldn't get much worse as far as she was concerned...

Setting her jaw, she tightened the mental shroud around herself, blanked her mind and kept walking...

The Singers of the Moon

Chris sensed Kal draw away and he couldn't blame her, most people didn't react well when the veil was lifted on their eyes and they could see the other side of Whisper City and the world.

Some went just plain mad...

He followed for a short while and then while they were occupied in finding Kal and him rooms and a shower, he lost himself in his own thoughts.

That's when it hit him...

You should have left her Chris, you should have kept running and kept her out of this, but you had to involve someone else, you're a dumb dog and you know it

Without a word he found the darkness of the underground room and sat on the edge of a makeshift bed, waiting for a while, showered and then dressed.

Sat in the center of the floor and brought his mind back to a time when he could run with the wolves and howl with the pack.

Decisions...

Have I done the right thing? Bringing them here, to my haven? Approaching them at all? What will I do if they decide to kill us? I cannot lose my children...

A hundred little what if's ran through Safiiri's head. Resolutely, the forced them down. What's done is done. I'd better get down there. They will have questions

Safiiri made her way down to the main room of the coven, and one of her favorites. Long ago she had helped to build it. The carpet was of a deep blue, with a dark red Egyptian onkh in the center of it. The walls were the same, blue with a line of the onkh's running along the ceiling. The ceiling itself was hand-carved. A huge, snow-white wolf, with tinges of silver here and there, depicted atop a cliff, overseeing the land in the very center. Far off from the wolf, a black cat, riding atop a smallish golden dragon, blue eyes alert. The carvings were all painted, making them look more real somehow. The furniture in the room ranged from an 18th century sofa to a newly acquired leather recliner.

It was here, trying to relax in her favorite chair, that Safiiri chose to wait for her guests. Andrea had already been sent to bring them, and their questions, here.

I only hope I have judged correctly were her last thoughts as the door opened...

Thoughts

Kal let herself relax only when she was alone in her room. Even then, she didn't stop to think about anything in particular and just moved to the bathroom. The tub was aleady filled so she bathed, dried off then dressed in the clean clothes that had been left in the room.

Physically, she sure felt better.

Closing her eyes, she sighed and sat down cross-legged on the floor. A few seconds passed and she began to meditate.

"...questions," a voice was saying.

Kalinah blinked her eyes open. Andrea was standing in front of her. "What, sorry?"

"I said that I'm to take you to meet Safiri, if you have any questions," the girl replied.

Kal stood up and stretched. She'd needed that time alone. "Ok, I'm ready." Following Andrea from the room and to a set of large doors, she resolved to open her mind to what was going on. She didn't know how all this had happened or why both she and Chris were being chased, but she wouldn't mind finding out...

Reflections of a pale moon

When he was summoned Chris rose in mute silence and walked from the room, lost in his thoughts and dreams, he followed like one of the dead-men before the grand doors, head hung low like a wolf that had been kicked.

He spoke to no one, but he fought inside of himself to control the raging monster that wanted to tear down the walls and break things.

"Welcome," said Safiiri as both Chris and Kal were led in from different doors. "We've already gone over the names, so I think it'd probably be best for you to ask any questions you have, and I to answer. But first, some basic info. As I said, I would like to form an alliance with you. I know that you have no reason to trust me, but I hope that we can work on that, and it's not something I expect right off. I will point out that I took a big risk bringing you here at all, in an attempt to show good faith. I have fought the Nightcrawlers for longer than either of you have been alive. I was made one against my will, by a sire who then walked out to watch the sunrise. I didn't even find out what I was for several years, and I wasn't overjoyed when I learned what the others of my kind are like. They must be stopped...will you work with me?"

Meeting...

Kalinah heard Safiri's words mixed with Chris's thoughts. It was impossible to concentrate with that maelstrom roaring right next to her head...

Her irritation softened when she actually listened to what he was thinking.

Hesitantly, as if unsure how her actions would be received, she took his right hand with her left and laced her fingers with his. Still looking at Safiri to maintain the appearance that she was paying attention, she thought directly into Christian's mind,

"It's not your fault. I'm glad you didn't leave. If you had, those Nightcrawlers would have taken me and who knows what would have happened. Please stay..."

Aware that Safiri had finished talking, Kal quickly asked, "Do you know what the... evil Nightcrawlers want with me?"

He squeezed Kal's hand a little and smiled at her, his eyes looked into hers for a moment, and he nodded.

In his own head.

Thanks, Kal

He heard her ask the question and waited for an answer on the surface, but inside his head his voice still buzzed.

Safiiri gave a light chuckle. "You can stop pretending you two. Being a Nightcrawler gives one the ability of telepathy. I'm not listening in at the moment, but I can "hear" that you're talking to each other. As to what they want with you Kalinah, that's very simple. They know you're a telepath. Such skill is greatly prized among them, for it is only strengthened by the Embrace. I'm quite certain you could kill with your abilities already. Imagine what you could do if they were magnified."

Safiiri gave that a few moments to sink in before continuing.

"That is what they want of you. As for you Chris, I hope you don't mind my calling you Chris, you are a Lycanthrope. The eternal enemy of most Nightcrawlers. Many of your kind have been stamped out, though we have cared for a few others here before. They seek either to turn you to their side, or to kill you."

The hairs on the back of Kal's neck stood on end at Safiri's suggestion. She knew perfectly well that she could kill with her thoughts - it was only by conscious choice that she didn't.

Her hand tightened around Chris's as she realised what his part in all this was.

Mentally nodding to Chris's last thoughts to her, she drew in a breath and asked Safiri, "Then what does the other faction of Nightcrawlers have against you that you'd risk bringing us here?"

"Or is this alliance just a means for revenge?" her mind added to Chris's.

Safiiri gave a slight smile. "They wanted me originally for the same reason they now want you Kalinah. When I was mortal, I was a telepath. Not as strong as you, but in those days any abilities were greatly prized. My sire was quite mad, and simply Embraced me then killed himself. Other factions, or clans as we call them, soon learned that I had been Embraced, and decided to "enlist" me. Chris has made you aware of those with no souls. It can be done to other vampires as well, it's just a bit more complicated. They attempted, they failed, and I ran. At first it became simple self-defense to fight them. As time wore on, I admit to developing a hatred of them. Does that answer your question?" said Safiiri.

Alliance?

Chris mentally nodded to Kal, he might be a Lycantherope, a Werewolf, but he was also pretty scared, he was in a Nightcrawler's lair for one. And if they did decide to turn on them, he could possibly take them out. But they could hurt him.

I'm not sure what her motives really are, but, I'm willing to try and go on a little faith

Was his only thought to Kal, coupled with a great feeling of protection for her.

Kalinah put her knife and fork down, unsure of what to say or ask. She wasn't tired, just still a bit stressed from everything that'd happened the last twelve hours.

They were apparently safe if they waited, but if Safiri was a telepath, there might be other vampiric telepaths (even though escapees from the labs were very rare) who could have the skill to track them down.

That thought suddenly struck a chord in Kal's mind and she stared at Safiri in abrupt recognition. "I know you..." she breathed.

Kal closed her eyes and concentrated on her memories, preparing to send past images and feelings to the minds of Safiri and Christian...

Her feet pounded on the road, breath coming in ragged gasps that whirled from her lips to the cold night air in small grey clouds. She slipped on the wet asphalt and fell, skinning one knee. Tears stung her eyes as her hand came away sticky with blood, but she was up and running again a second later, angling for the deep shadows of an alley.

She was twelve years old and with telepathic powers greater than any in the labs, had managed to escape. They were after her, and there were stories that escapees were shot. Never dragged back to the labs. Not alive, anyway.

She hid in the scant cover provided by a couple of trash cans and a large box of mouldy cardboard, but was able to create the illusion that she wasn't there. Blending in with her surroundings.

But then a searching mind brushed against hers. Her eyes widened. This wasn't possible... they never used telepaths to track people down; there was too great a risk that they'd escape. The mind was getting closer, though, as were the shouts of the psy-cops.

Kalinah jumped up and fled down the alley.

The mind kept brushing against hers, though. It couldn't get a grip on her, but she could sense it was female, searching for her, and unlike any human mind. She shied away from that seemingly non-human touch and hastily formed a mental shield around herself. Again she hid, and this time the cops passed her by.

The strange mind lingered a bit longer, as if knowing she was there but unable to find her, then it too drifted away into the night.

Kalinah huddled into the pile of refuse and pulled her t-shirt closer around her thin shoulders, shivering from more than just the cold. The touch of that strange mind was one she was not likely to forget, even though it had only been a light one.

Sleep was a long time coming.

Kal leaned back into her chair, drained mentally and emotionally. "You said you searched for children on the street, and have been for some time," she said to Safiri, one hand rubbing her eyes. "That night you almost found me. That's how I recognised you... or your mind."

She sighed deeply and closed her eyes again. "I'm sorry... that was very tiring..."

Mindmeld

Woah, Chris was there, suddenly in his head, his bond with Kal, much stronger and he experienced everything at once, with her, through her eyes.

He sat back and dropped his steak half eaten to the platter with a thud, shook his head and slumped a little.
